The Perfect Fall Tree & Shrub Protection for Winter

With winter being just around the corner, people are pulling out their coats, hats, and gloves for protection. It only makes sense with the Michigan weather being so finicky. Why leave it up to fate if you are going to be prepared or not?

Well, the same things go for the trees and shrubs around us. Homeowners plant them all year and often assume that they will come and go with the seasons. It is usually because people equate them with garden plants. But that’s unfortunately not true for trees and shrubs. If they are not properly taken care of, they can easily need to be removed.

So with the days turning colder and colder, you will need to start preparing your trees and shrubs to be protected throughout the winter. After all, Michigan’s cool-season lasts a lot longer than our warm-season and we want to be sure that our greenery not only survives it but thrives again each spring and summer. Follow along for two winterizing tips for your trees and shrubs.

Deep-Root Feeding

Deep-Root Feeding

By targeting fertilizer directly into the roots and soil of the tree or shrub, they will have easier access to the nutrients. Deep-root feeding is done by injecting fertilizer about 8-14 inches beneath the ground. To ensure full coverage, the process is done in a grid pattern. This will leave no room for missed spots, and your tree’s roots will be fully fed.

Deep-root injections are always done as a preventative. Once your tree has run out of nutrients because of the winter, other measures have to be taken. The team at Visionary Landscaping and Fertilization recommends doing this in the fall. During October and early November are perfect times.

Winterguard

Your trees and shrubs will need a protective barrier, kind of like the winter coat you or I wear. This allows your trees and shrubs to be shielded from the sun and wine. The barrier itself will also help your greenery lock in the moisture it needs. This prevents drying out and tree stress in the depths of the winter months.

For this tree and shrub protection, it needs to be done before the ground freezes. It will be different for everyone, but our clients are in Michigan. The Michigan ground will likely freeze much more quickly. Not because it is more susceptible to freeze, but because our state is colder than our southern friends. This means you should not wait for this treatment for your trees.

Are You Looking for Protection for Your Trees and Shrubs?

It’s already October! While in some states that means a breezy autumn, that is not the case in Michigan. Although winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21st, we experience winter weather well before that. Why wait and risk your trees and shrubs dying this winter?

Our team at Visionary Landscaping and Fertilization offers an extensive tree and shrub care program that includes both deep-root injections and Winterguard applications.
